“Our goal is to boost people's global wellness through scientific and technological innovation”. This is the claim of MODRAGON Health, one of the state's leading business groups focused on connecting science and technology to create customized wellness solutions.

More than 20 years ago, MONDRAGON embarked on a strategy of diversification into the field of health, considering it a sector with great potential to generate employment and wealth. Aware of the important role that biotechnological innovations play in the field of health, they will be present at the AseBio Investor Day, a meeting point for leading national and international investors and biotechnology companies. Hector Olabegogeaskoetxea Narbaiza, Managing Director of MONDRAGON Health, analyzes in this interview the biotechnology innovation ecosystem in Spain as part of the AseBio Investor Day.

AseBio: What is Mondragon Health?

Hector Olabegogeaskoetxea Narbaiza. Biotechnology in healthcare is a beacon of hope in modern medicine. From biological drugs to genetic therapies, its impact is undeniable. With more precise diagnoses and revolutionary therapies, it is a fundamental pillar in the fight against disease, promoting a healthier future.

AseBio. From your experience, what are the biotechnological innovations that have revolutionized the world of health in recent years?

Hector Olabegogeaskoetxea Narbaiza. Advanced therapies have been a real boost in the field of biotechnology, where cell and gene therapies have made a breakthrough and are already being applied in widely used drugs, but above all they provide new avenues of research for diseases for which there is currently no cure. For example, CRISPR technology has enabled exciting advances in gene editing, opening up new possibilities for treating genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy, while CAR-T therapy has revolutionized cancer treatment by reprogramming the patient's immune cells to specifically attack cancer cells.

AseBio: What trends are expected in the field of biotechnology applied to health?

Hector Olabegogeaskoetxea Narbaiza. The integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the analysis of genetic data should have a significant impact. In parallel, biotechnological improvements in the environmental field, which directly affect people's health, should be another decisive element. Relevant factors that are linked and that biotechnology favors in its search for improvements in processes and developments.

Hector Olabegogeaskoetxea Narbaiza. Our main objective is to make MONDRAGON Health and its cooperatives known. We are relatively new in this sector, so it is up to us to do that groundwork. We also believe that we can adapt the capabilities we have in other sectors to this one and be a partner that can add value.
