BCN HEALTH has published the study ‘The cost of lost productivity due to premature lung cancer-related mortality: results from Spain over a 10-year period’ in the journal BMC Cancer, an international peer-reviewed journal interested in publications on all aspects of cancer, including cellular and molecular biology, genetics, epidemiology and clinical studies.

BCN HEALTH developed an analysis of productivity losses due to lung cancer in Spain between 2008 and 2017. This analysis was based on the human capital method, which assesses the contribution to national productivity that is lost when there is a premature death. For this purpose, data on lung cancer mortality in Spain were extracted from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Average wages and unemployment rates by sex and age group were also obtained and taken into account in the final calculation.

Lung cancer was responsible for 69,225 deaths in the ten years of the study. In 2017, this type of cancer caused 29% of cancer deaths in men and 11% in women, although in the latter case an increase was observed over the years. This type of cancer was responsible for losses of more than €13 billion over the ten-year study period.
