BCN HEALTH publica un estudio evaluando la incidencia y el coste de la enfermedad renal crónica en España

BCN HEALTH has published in the Journal of Medical Economics a study analyzing the incidence, management, and associated costs of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Spain between 2011 and 2017. Based on records from over 125,000 patients, the research reveals that most hospital cases correspond to advanced stages of the disease and that the average cost per patient amounts to €10,436, showing a progressive decrease over the study period.

BCN HEALTH has published the study “Chronic Kidney Disease in Spain: Analysis of Patient Characteristics, Incidence and Direct Medical Costs (2011–2017)” in the Journal of Medical Economics, an international peer-reviewed journal that publishes economic evaluations of new therapeutic interventions and medical devices, as well as studies assessing therapeutic, preventive, or public health interventions.

BCN HEALTH conducted a retrospective study using records of patients diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who were treated in primary care centers and public and private hospitals in Spain between 2011 and 2017. The aim of the study was to analyze the incidence and mortality of the disease, its management, and the associated costs.

In total, records of 125,674 CKD patients treated in primary care centers and 24,389 hospitalization records were reviewed. Most patients recorded in hospitals were in an advanced stage of the disease, stage 5 or terminal. The most frequent comorbidities were hypertensive nephropathy, diabetes, anemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertension. The number of visits recorded in primary care increased over the study period, while hospital visits decreased. The mortality rate remained stable at the hospital level and was associated with respiratory failure and heart failure.

The average hospital cost per patient was €10,436. Transplant complications and bacterial infections were factors associated with the greatest increases in total cost, which decreased over the study period.
