BCN HEALTH publishes a study evaluating the incidence and cost of atopic dermatitis in Spain
BCN HEALTH has published the study “Atopic dermatitis in specialized centers in Spain: a retrospective analysis of incidence and costs (2000-2017)” in the journal Expert Review of Pharmacoeconomics & Outcomes Research, an internationally peer-reviewed journal covering all aspects of pharmacoeconomics.
BCN HEALTH conducted a retrospective study based on patient records of individuals diagnosed with atopic dermatitis and treated in public and private hospitals in Spain between 2000 and 2017. The study aimed to analyze the hospital incidence of the disease and the associated costs.
For this study, records of visits from 3,036 patients were reviewed, including 1,266 children under the age of five. Among the patients, 22% had a history of allergies, and 17% had some form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Skin infections and other types of bacterial infections were also diagnosed. The hospital incidence rate during the study period was 5.8 cases per 100,000 people, reaching 30 cases per 100,000 among patients under five years old. Additionally, younger patients had a higher percentage of emergency visits.
The annual hospital-related costs of the disease were €2,469 per patient, with no differences between age groups. However, the cost per patient increased significantly over the study period.ç
