BCN HEALTH has published the study 'Burden of ischemic heart disease in Spain: incidence, hospital mortality and costs of hospital care' in the journal 'Expert Review of Pharmacoeconomics & Outcomes Research', an international journal that publishes peer-reviewed articles on cost-benefit and pharmacoeconomics issues related to the clinical use of drugs and therapeutic approaches.
BCN HEALTH conducted a retrospective study based on records of inpatient and outpatient visits of patients diagnosed with ischaemic heart disease in Spanish hospitals between 1st January 2011 and 31st December 2019. The aim of this study was to assess the use of healthcare resources associated with ischaemic heart disease in Spain, analyse trends in hospitalisation and mortality rates, and related direct medical costs.
During the study period, 971,193 admission records, mainly hospital admissions, corresponding to 814,740 individual patients were reviewed. Most of the patients were male with a mean age of 69 years. The incidence decreased significantly in most age groups over time. The mortality rate was significantly higher among women (6.6%).
The median direct medical cost of admission was €5,175. The highest costs per admission were for patients with acute myocardial infarction and for admissions with ICU stay. The annual cost of hospital care was €693.8 million. The higher in-hospital mortality rate among women should be considered in future studies and protocol reviews.
