BCN HEALTH conducted a retrospective study based on the records of patients hospitalized due to endometriosis and treated in Spanish public and private hospitals between January of 2009 and December of 2018. The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence of the disease at the hospital level and to calculate its associated medical costs.
The files obtained corresponded to 41,118 patients diagnosed with endometriosis, with a median age of 37 years. Hospital incidence decreased significantly over the study period, indicating a shift in disease management.
The majority of hospitalizations were associated to surgical procedures, namely the excision or destruction of lesions, with a median length of stay of 3 days. Length of hospital stay was associated to patient age. The mean annual direct medical cost of secondary care was €3,566 per patient over the study period. The highest costs were registered in patients with intestinal endometriosis.
