BCN HEALTH has published the study Prostate cancer in Spain: A retrospective database analysis of hospital incidence and the direct medical" in Plos ONE, an international multidisciplinary peer-reviewed journal interested in publishing rigorous scientific studies that could lead to important advances for society.

BCN HEALTH conducted a retrospective study based on records of patients diagnosed with prostate cancer and treated in public and private hospitals in Spain between January 2016 and December 2020. The aim of this study was to review the incidence data of the disease at hospital level, and to calculate the associated medical costs.

In total, data from 8,217 patients were reviewed. The median age was almost 72 years, with 66% of cases diagnosed in patients aged between 66 and 85 years. Patients had a variety of comorbidities including hypertension, COPD and hyperlipidemia. The prostate cancer mortality rate and the number of admissions due to this disease decreased significantly during the study period.

The mean length of hospital stay was 7 days, with a mean of 2.4 interventions. The average cost per hospitalization was 5,212.98 euros while the total cost of prostate cancer in Spain at hospital level was 48.87 million euros during the study period.
