BCN HEALTH publishes a study evaluating the incidence and costs associated with osteogenesis imperfecta in Spain
BCN HEALTH conducted a retrospective study using records of patients diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta who were treated in public and private hospitals in Spain between 2000 and 2017.
BCN HEALTH has published the study “Hospital incidence, management and direct costs of osteogenesis imperfecta in Spain: a retrospective database analysis” in the Journal of Medical Economics, an international peer-reviewed journal that publishes economic evaluations of new therapeutic interventions and medical devices, as well as studies assessing therapeutic, preventive, or public health interventions.
BCN HEALTH conducted a retrospective study using records of patients diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta who were treated in public and private hospitals in Spain between 2000 and 2017. The aim of the study was to analyze the incidence of this disease at the hospital level and the associated medical costs.
Records of 998 patients with osteogenesis imperfecta were identified, 48.2% of whom were male. The overall hospital incidence was 5.6 per 100,000 patients during the study period, while incidence at birth was 10.1 per 100,000. Mortality was mainly associated with neonatal conditions and acute respiratory failure. Hospital stays averaged 2.8 days, and most patients presented other bone or cartilage disorders, growth delays, and hypocalcemia.
The average hospital cost was 2,571 euros per visit, increasing throughout the study period.
