#BIOSPAIN2023Interview | "The evolution of the approach to treating skin diseases in recent years has been significant, and it is notably marked by the development of biologic treatments"
We spoke with Volker Koscielny, Chief Medical Officer of Almirall, Platinum Sponsor of BIOSPAIN 2023, to understand the importance of preserving skin health.
The skin is the largest and most vulnerable organ of the body, and as a result, it is constantly exposed to various external factors that can damage it. According to a study by the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV), skin diseases rank as the fourth most common type of ailments. Despite the fact that dermatological conditions affect millions of people worldwide, there is a lack of awareness about the debilitating impact they can cause and the importance of protecting our skin.
From atopic dermatitis to psoriasis and actinic keratosis, skin diseases can have a significant impact on both the physical appearance and well-being of individuals. For this reason, it is essential to maintain proper skin care and consult a medical professional to follow the appropriate treatment for each condition.
In order to delve into skin health and the importance of a proper approach to enhance people's lives, we spoke with Volker Koscielny Chief Medical Officer of Almirall, a leading global pharmaceutical company focused on medical dermatology and a Platinum Sponsor of BIOSPAIN 2023, an international reference event in the biotechnology sector.
AseBio. When we talk about skin diseases, many people think of cancer, but what other skin diseases have a high prevalence?
Volker Koscielny. Some of the most prevalent skin diseases include psoriasis, which affects about 2.3% of the Spanish population, atopic dermatitis, with a prevalence of 4.4% in European adults, actinic keratosis, one of the most common diagnoses made by dermatologists, with an estimated prevalence of 28.6% in the Spanish population over 45 years old, acne, and onychomycosis. These are Almirall's main therapeutic areas, where we work every day to improve the lives of patients.
These diseases can significantly impact people's quality of life, and thus, we are committed to developing innovative and safe therapies to address their specific needs. Our focus on scientific research and collaboration with dermatology experts allows us to continue advancing in the development of effective and personalized treatments. Each condition can vary in severity and symptoms, which is why it's important to seek guidance from a healthcare professional to obtain an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
AseBio. What are the main risk factors for the development of skin diseases?
Volker Koscielny. The risk factors for the development of skin diseases are quite diverse, ranging from genetic predisposition in the case of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis to cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation in actinic keratosis. In addition to these factors, there are also other determinants such as health-related habits and lifestyle.
At Almirall, we collaborate with patient associations like Acción Psoriasis or Euromelanoma to raise awareness about the main symptoms of different dermatological diseases among the general population and to encourage them to undergo regular dermatological check-ups to identify and treat these diseases as early as possible.
For instance, in May 2023, on the occasion of International Actinic Keratosis Day that we celebrated in collaboration with Euromelanoma, we presented the results of a survey conducted on 2,543 individuals over 35 years old from Spain, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The survey revealed that despite actinic keratosis being the most common precancerous condition, 85% of Spanish are unaware of the disease, and more than half have never undergone a dermatological examination. These results demonstrate that awareness is essential to minimize the risk factors that can lead to the development of actinic keratosis lesions or trigger outbreaks of diseases like psoriasis or atopic dermatitis.
AseBio. What are the implications of neglecting skin care for our health?
Volker Koscielny. The skin is the largest organ of the body, performing vital functions such as protecting against infections, regulating body temperature, and maintaining water balance. Poor skin care can increase the likelihood of outbreaks in diseases like atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and acne, among others, which can have a significant impact on individuals' emotional and physical well-being.
Moreover, unhealthy skin can be more susceptible to infections, irritations, and allergies, potentially compromising the skin barrier and increasing inflammation. It is essential to promote the importance of skin care and encourage healthy habits, such as adequate hydration to prevent dryness, peeling, or acne; sun protection to prevent burns, cancer, and premature skin aging; regular skin cleansing; and the appropriate use of dermatological products recommended by a healthcare professional to maintain healthy skin and prevent potential complications.
At Almirall, we are committed to developing innovative therapeutic solutions and dermatological treatments that address these unmet medical needs and contribute to the well-being and health of patients with skin diseases.
AseBio: From Almirall's experience, how can we enhance skin protection?
Volker Koscielny. To enhance skin protection, a comprehensive and responsible approach to its care is necessary, following the guidance of a healthcare professional.
Protection against solar radiation is essential to prevent skin damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer, so it's important to use sunscreen with an appropriate sun protection factor and apply it generously before sun exposure. Additionally, avoiding direct sun exposure during the peak hours of intensity can help reduce the risk of skin damage.
Keeping the skin well-hydrated is crucial for its health and protection, so it's recommended to use moisturizing creams or lotions suitable for each person's skin type. Moreover, being vigilant about any changes in the skin, such as new spots, lesions, or unusual redness, is vital to detect potential skin issues early and seek medical attention if necessary.
AseBio. How has the approach to treating skin diseases evolved in recent years?
Volker Koscielny. The evolution of the approach to treating skin diseases in recent years has been significant, notably characterized by the development of biologic treatments, a promising therapeutic option for various skin conditions like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
In recent years, Almirall's dedication to scientific research in dermatology and collaboration with experts has enabled us to develop biologic treatments with a favorable balance of efficacy and safety. We are committed to continued innovation and making a meaningful impact, aiming to provide optimal and personalized care for each patient.
AseBio. Is there a greater social awareness about the importance of skin care?
Volker Koscielny. Society has become more conscious of the effects of sun exposure, pollution, and other environmental factors on skin health. Public awareness and education about skin prevention and proper care have increased, motivating people to adopt more mindful and proactive skincare routines. Moreover, access to information through digital media and social networks has played a pivotal role in spreading knowledge about skincare.
In this context, pharmaceutical companies like Almirall also play a vital role by driving educational campaigns, promoting the significance of skin care, and developing innovative therapeutic solutions to address various skin diseases. With the support of science and technology, it's possible to enhance health and quality of life, fostering a stronger collective awareness about the relevance of skin care.
