Organized by AseBio, the Spanish Association of Biocompanies, and the Government of Navarra through Sodena, Navarra’s Development Society, the Green Innovation Forum will bring together over 300 professionals on November 19 in Pamplona to discuss the opportunities biotechnology can offer as a key tool in the transition toward a more sustainable, carbon-neutral, and greener economic model.

The Green Innovation Forum 2024 provides a unique meeting point for Spanish and international companies and research institutions at the forefront of green biotechnology. An unmissable event for the sector, we explore it alongside one of its sponsors: ZETA, a company specializing in the design, construction, automation, digitalization, and qualification of customized biopharmaceutical plants for aseptic process solutions.

AseBio: What is ZETA?

Christine Kolland: ZETA designs, builds, and optimizes biotechnological and biopharmaceutical production plants worldwide. In all its activities, it places a special emphasis on sustainability (energy efficiency, decarbonization, etc.).

AseBio: What is the company's vision regarding sustainability and environmental protection?

Christine Kolland: At ZETA, our view on sustainability and the environment goes beyond numbers and commitments. As a significant industrial player, we recognize our responsibility to protect the planet, not only for today but for future generations. Every optimized process and emission reduction paves the way for a greener future. We know that our actions have a global impact, and it’s our duty to lead with energy-efficient solutions, showing that industry can and must be a driving force toward a more sustainable and responsible tomorrow.

AseBio: ZETA is taking steps towards a more sustainable future for the entire sector through decarbonization strategies. What do these strategies involve?

Christine Kolland: ZETA is adopting a comprehensive approach to decarbonization that includes several key sustainability strategies. These strategies focus on improving the energy efficiency of buildings, processes, and vehicles, as well as transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. They also encourage self-generated energy production, such as installing photovoltaic systems. Additionally, ZETA develops specific roadmaps for each company, including a detailed analysis of possible measures and their technological and economic impact. Implementation is carried out in stages, from determining the carbon footprint to planning and executing measures to reduce emissions.

AseBio: What tangible results have these initiatives achieved?

Christine Kolland: Among the tangible results, ZETA has significantly reduced the carbon footprint of its clients in the pharmaceutical sector. Energy efficiency measures and the shift to renewable energy have resulted in a decrease in fossil fuel consumption and, in some cases, a reduction in carbon emissions by over 90%. Financially, these measures have shown long-term returns, especially related to reduced energy consumption. Additionally, ZETA has helped multiple facilities achieve zero emissions targets for 2035. The use of green energy and the potential transition to biofuels have also proven effective in meeting sustainability goals.

AseBio: Based on your experience, what are the main challenges the biotechnology sector faces regarding sustainability?

Christine Kolland: Not only in biotechnology but in the industry in general, efficiency/cost and sustainability are often seen as opposing forces. However, environmentally friendly solutions can also increase efficiency and reduce costs in the long term (for example, designing energy consumption in cleanrooms with the help of simulation based on actual usage...).

AseBio: How do you collaborate with other companies or stakeholders in the business ecosystem to advance sustainable solutions?

Christine Kolland: Our goal is to drive sustainability alongside our clients and partners. A holistic approach, like the one we follow at ZETA, requires the interaction and alignment of various disciplines, working together like a well-oiled machine.

AseBio: What is the primary goal of participating as a sponsor in the Green Innovation Forum 2024?

Christine Kolland: It’s a great opportunity to highlight important issues and discuss challenges and solution strategies with key stakeholders.
