#NewMember | "AseBio has been a helping hand in gaining visibility and attracting resources"
Meet PALMEERA, our new partner. We talked to Jorge González Cánovas, the company's Operations Director.
AseBio. What does your company's work bring to the table and what is its strength?
Jorge González Cánovas. Palmeera is a quality-focused, scalable, cannabis cultivation and distribution company with the long-term vision of creating positive social impact by serving the pharmaceutical, wellness and lifestyle industries with high-grade dried flowers from truly exceptional cultivars grown sustainably using nature’s resources efficiently.
AseBio. What is AseBio for you?
Jorge González Cánovas. For us, AseBio has been the helping hand when it comes at gaining visibility and attracting resources. For the cannabis industry, the traditional means of financing are currently of limited availability as the industry is still transitioning to legalization. For example, AseBio’s Investor Day was a great opportunity to introduce our company to an active pool of VC investors and gain visibility.
AseBio. When did you first hear about AseBio?
Jorge González Cánovas. We heard about AseBio a year ago when we had the opportunity to read their annual report on the increasing role of the Spanish biotechnology sector for the overall economy.
AseBio. What do you expect from being part of an association like AseBio?
Jorge González Cánovas. Currently, we are still a small firm and, to be frank, our expectation was to get some help along the way. Over time, we hope that our contribution to AseBio’s activities and events will increase and we could make an impact!
AseBio. What is the biggest challenge facing the biotech sector (or your company)?
Jorge González Cánovas.Companies in the cannabis industry face very significant challenges. The first is that the industry is still transitioning from the black market and there is still a huge stigma. The second is that being a new industry, producers, regulators, investors, etc…we are all learning along the way, and this translates into risk that needs to be carefully managed. And third, cannabis is mostly legalized for medical use and so producers must operate in a very complex regulatory environment. However, to be fair, all these challenges make the industry interesting!
