The 17th meeting of the Spanish Drug Discovery Network (SDDN) will take place at the Hotel Attica in A Coruña on 20 and 21 November 2025. This leading event has established itself as an ideal space for networking among drug discovery professionals from both academia and industry.

Each year, we select a set of key topics to encourage the exchange of ideas and promote debate among experts with diverse backgrounds and careers, but with a common goal: to drive the development of new therapies through multidisciplinary and translational drug discovery research.

As part of the programme, AseBio is organising a round table entitled ‘Stories of Drug Discovery. The path to drug discovery: Lessons from academia and industry’.

The preclinical development of new therapeutics is a complex and multifaceted process. Bringing a drug candidate from the laboratory to clinical trials—and ultimately to patients—requires a combination of scientific and non-scientific factors. On the scientific side, it involves identifying a suitable therapeutic target, developing a compound with high efficacy, low toxicity, and good bioavailability in the target tissue. But there are also other critical, yet sometimes overlooked, factors, such as securing financial resources, gaining access to relevant disease models for proof-of-concept studies, and leveraging prior experience in preclinical development.

In this session, we will hear from four promising biotech companies who will share the stories behind their latest drug development programmes. They will also reflect on the lessons learned along the way. A key point of discussion will be: What role does being (or not being) an academic spin-off play? Has that connection accelerated their development or introduced limitations?

  • Ainara Vallejo Fillarramendi (Miramoon).
  • Miriam Corredor (NoctuRNA Therapeutics) ‘Circular RNA-based therapy to treat incurable diseases.’
  • Javier Terriente (GT Drug Discovery, ZeCardio) ‘Using zebrafish to discover cardiac regeneration in humans.’
  • Sonia Martínez Arca (Batea Oncology) ‘Transforming glioblastoma into a treatable disease’.
