On May 15, 2024, the city of San Sebastián will become a meeting point for prominent national and international investors and biotechnological companies during the celebration of a new edition of the AseBio Investor Day. This event, organized by AseBio, stands as a reference in terms of biotechnological innovation.

This is confirmed by data from its last edition, where more than 265 delegates from 146 companies from 12 countries gathered. An ecosystem conducive to understanding the latest biotech trends and the challenges on the horizon for a sector that generated more than 330 one-to-one meetings. It's worth noting the significant presence of investors, exceeding fifty.

As in previous editions, the event will include a program of roundtable discussions, provide companies with the opportunity to present their business plans to a diverse audience of specialized investors, and facilitate bilateral meetings through a partnering platform.

Speaking of disruptive innovations inevitably involves biotechnology, a deep tech sector that is transforming the world and holds great potential as one of the most science-intensive industries. The impact of biotechnology on our economy, the quality of life, and the planet's sustainability is undeniable, as demonstrated by data collected in the AseBio 2022 Report.

According to this report, in 2021, the impact on the GDP of biotech companies amounted to €11,183 million, representing 1% of the GDP. After two years of unprecedented growth due to the pandemic, the investment attracted by Spanish biotechnology stabilizes in 2022 at €142 million.

Biotech companies invested €1,038 million in R&D (a 16% growth), accounting for over 6% of the total national investment. Notably, 'biotech' represents more than 60% of R&D investment.

The number of biotech companies in Spain continues to grow. Two decades ago, the sector had around 50 companies strictly considered 'biotech,' a number that now stands at 898, following a 4.2% growth in 2021, with an annual average of 48 new companies created over the last decade.

In terms of distribution across the national territory, Catalonia leads with 24.5%, followed by Madrid (17%), and Andalusia (14%).

Biotech companies remain the industrial sector with the highest percentage of researchers among total employees, accounting for 14.62% of the total workforce. The work carried out by these researchers places Spain as the ninth power in terms of scientific production in biotechnology.

The picture we observe of the biotechnological industry in Spain is positive and has the potential to keep advancing, especially in a context where biotechnology has been identified by the European Commission as one of the four essential areas for the future of the European Union and achieving its strategic autonomy.

Due to its scientific and technological potential, both in the public and private sectors, Spain has the responsibility to give a new boost to the biotechnological sector. Events like the AseBio Investor Day 2024 are crucial to garner the necessary support and sow the seeds of an optimal encouraging ecosystem that allows biotechnological innovations to progress and lead in cutting-edge areas.
