The Centro de Servicios Innovadores para Empresas Biotecnológicas (CSIEB) at Biopolo Sionlla, Santiago de Compostela, hosted this morning the kick-off meeting to design the strategy of the European BIOCHAINS Atlantic project. This European initiative is led by Clúster Tecnolóxico Empresarial das Ciencias da Vida (Bioga) and is funded with €1.86 million through the Interreg Atlantic Area program and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Today's meeting at Biopolo Sionlla brought together partners from this international consortium and marks the official launch of a project aimed at boosting the blue bioeconomy through the optimization of microalgae and macroalgae value chains in the Atlantic region.

BIOCHAINS Atlantic, a strategic project for the Atlantic algae value chain, will work over the coming years to improve and consolidate production, processing, and utilization chains of microalgae and macroalgae in Spain, Portugal, France, and Ireland. Bioga’s President, Jose Vilariño, emphasizes that the program “will strengthen a key sector for the blue economy and generate new market opportunities.”

The project’s work lines include mapping value chain stakeholders and analyzing regulatory challenges, developing digital models for efficient resource and process management, validating prototypes applicable to sectors such as food, cosmetics, and industrial biotechnology, improving SME competitiveness, promoting innovation, and enhancing transnational cooperation.

The working meeting at Biopolo Sionlla allowed partners to coordinate efforts and define the project roadmap. Objectives, methodologies, initial tasks, and strategic milestones guiding project implementation were presented. The meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration and knowledge transfer to consolidate a sector with high social and economic potential in the Atlantic area.

In addition to Bioga as coordinating partner, BIOCHAINS Atlantic includes six main partners: ANFACO-CYTMA (Spain), GLECEX (Spain), CATAA (Portugal), WeDoTech (Portugal), Biotech Santé Bretagne (France), and Munster Technological University (Ireland). Eleven additional associated partners also participate: Centro de Investigación Mariña (CIM) de la Universidade de Vigo (Spain), DomusVi (Spain), Viratec (Spain), BlueBio Alliance (Portugal), InovCluster (Portugal), Cluster Algues Bretagne (France), Chambre Syndicale des Algues et Végétaux Marins (France), Algolesko (France), BIM Ireland’s Seafood Development Agency (Ireland), Kerry County Council Economic (Ireland), and Nutramara (Ireland).
