Glycobasque 8 brought together leading international figures in glycosciences in San Sebastián hosted by Asparia Glycomics
The eighth edition of Glycobasque turned San Sebastián into a hub for glycoscience research on October 23–24. The meeting, led by Asparia Glycomics in collaboration with the research centers CIC bioGUNE (Derio, Bizkaia) and CIC biomaGUNE (San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa), gathered researchers from across Europe in a high-level scientific program.
Over the course of a day and a half, Glycobasque 8 combined plenary lectures, presentations by early-career scientists, and spaces for scientific dialogue designed to foster interaction across different areas of glycan research. Directed by researchers Niels Reichardt and Jesús Jiménez-Barbero, the conference provided a reference forum for discussing recent advances in glycobiology, immunology, and carbohydrate chemistry.
Among the invited speakers were Dr. Martina Delbianco (Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Germany), Prof. Lars Nitschke (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität, Germany), Prof. Xufei Huang (Michigan State University, USA), and Dr. June Ereño (CIC bioGUNE, Spain), who presented cutting-edge research on glycan synthesis, molecular recognition mechanisms, and the design of new therapeutic tools and glycan-based vaccines.
As in every edition, Glycobasque also served as a platform for collaboration and discussion on the latest developments in the field. Informal exchanges and scientific sessions encouraged the sharing of ideas and the creation of new networks among academic institutions, technology centers, and biopharmaceutical companies. This collaborative environment strengthened Glycobasque’s role as a key meeting point for the international glycoscience community.
For Asparia Glycomics, the main organizer and sponsor of the event, this edition reaffirmed its commitment to advancing scientific research and promoting the application of knowledge to contemporary biomedical challenges. The company continues to play an active role in driving innovation and supporting the growth of a field that is expanding its applications in health, diagnostics, and pharmaceutical development.
In line with its tradition, Glycobasque alternates its venue between San Sebastián and Bilbao. The next edition will take place in Bilbao in 2026, with further details about the program and schedule to be announced in the coming months.
