BIOLAN is currently part of the AQUAVITAE project, funded by the European Commission and which main objective is to perform high quality research in the aquaculture field. The project is fostering the development of new products and technological solutions that will allow society to benefit from aquaculture as sustainable food source.
AQUAVITAE´s consortium involves 38 partners across 3 continents from both academia and industry. BIOLAN´s aim within the project is to provide analytical solutions for the aquaculture field, specifically for the detection of sulphite. Sulphite is a food additive employed in the harvesting of crustaceans in order to avoid melanosis (darkening of the skin) and which maximum levels are controlled by law.
The project, in its final stage now, has been recently reviewed in the general meeting that took place in Brazil last April. BIOLAN´s role in AQUAVITAE has been key for the development of a portable digitalised analytical tool at the same time that has created a unique and crucial network within the aquaculture field that would definitely open numerous possibilities for further collaboration.
