A gender perspective in health care help improve women's health
La ‘I Jornada Genusal. Impulsando la perspectiva de género en salud’ trató las diferencias de salud según el género, poniendo de manifiesto la necesidad de las mujeres y evitar los sesgos de sexo que influyen negativamente en este ámbito.

On 19 February, the University of Salamanca, with the support of the science and technology company Merck and the pharmaceutical company Organon, organised the meeting 'I Jornada Genusal. Promoting the gender perspective in health'. National and international experts met for two days to discuss the differences in health between men and women, reflect on the needs of women and present initiatives that can help to avoid sex and gender biases that negatively influence this area.
"From the perspective of research and development of new molecules and drugs, it is necessary to take gender into account in order to adapt the trials and be able to study their efficacy and safety, including the different characteristics of the disease in each sex in the designs, as well as in the definition of objectives and variables. If we don't do this, we will leave the research project incomplete," said Isabel Sánchez Magro, medical director of Merck in Spain.
The conference highlighted the changing health needs of women in care and employment, gender perspectives in cancer research, the importance of data in addressing health disparities, as well as the views of patient associations on health bias and gender perspectives in research, training and care practice.
The main focus was on Genusal, the strategy promoted by the Vice-Rectorate for Health Sciences and Social Affairs of the University of Salamanca to institutionally promote the inclusion of the gender perspective in teaching, research and transfer actions in the field of health.
